When I saw the beaut Shanice Amour collection at Jsky’s Fashion Night I just knew I had to have a chat with Shanice and find out more about her beautiful collection. So, Shanice and I sat down and had a chat all things fashion, inspiration and it left me wondering when my next big event was for me to wear my very own Shanice Amour dress!
Hey Shanice, how are you?
Hi Gabby, good thank you, hope you are well too!
I’m great thank you! So, you own Shanice Amour, tell me a bit about how you started this up.
So it’s something I have always wanted to do, it just took a long time for me to give myself enough confidence to do it! I studied fashion at college where I learnt how to develop my own patterns, the plan was to then take a year out before going to university which never happened. I think I made the right decision though because I was able to teach myself further at home and make my own dresses for nights out etc.
Then about 3 years ago I had a bad day in retail and snapped and thought I don’t want to be stood here anymore, I want to be doing my own dresses. At the time I was living in Leeds for the year doing merchandising, I spoke to a good friend Nik, who you’ll know as Mr Deansgate, and got some business advice from him. He said if I was serious about setting the business up I needed to move back to Manchester..so I did 3 weeks later. From there I started attending MCR Fashion Industry events and networking, from that I made contacts to dress for the next few events.
Have you always been interested in fashion?
Yes, ever since I was little. I used to sleep with a diary and wake up in the night and make a quick sketch. When I was 5 I used to sellotape feather bowers to my Winnie the Pooh night dresses haha…thankfully my taste and style have highly improved!!
Haha! You never know, Winnie the Pooh night dresses with feather bowers could be a thing of the future! Do you have any fashion designers that inspire you?
Yes, quite a few; Zac Posen, his couture gowns are exquisite and always a show stopper. Victoria Beckham, I love how she redeveloped her entire image for a career in fashion and got rid of the ‘wag’ title; and of course Dior Haute Couture.
Your collections are beautiful, do you have a personal favourite from your collection?
Aw thank you, that means so much to hear! Oh yes, my Willow dress is probably my all-time favourite dress that I’ve made…so far! I think it defines what I want the brand to be. I do have other favourite designs, but they are still to be made!
You have worked with a list of well-known people for some prestigious events, how does it feel when you see a piece from your collection being worn at an event or in the press?
Very surreal, I’m still so humble about it all and I pray I stay that way. Every time I see someone in my designs it’s a dream come true each and every time, and when they hit the press and make it on the best-dressed list it makes my entire week and I know I’m one step closer to being where I want to be.
Let’s talk future plans, have you got anything coming up?
So I am very lucky to be attending the M.E.N Diary Party this year where so far I’ll be dressing myself and Miss Manchester (again). Then hopefully I can get to Denise Welch’s charity ball in November.
I have got some more designs there ready to be photographed for the winter collection so keep your eyes peeled…
If you could dress anyone in the world, who would it be?
